1. Cấu trúc của thì quá khứ đơn

Với động từ tobe:

(+): S + was/ were

(-): S + was/were not + V (nguyên thể)

(?): Was/Were+ S + V(nguyên thể)?

Ví dụ: They were in London on their summer holiday last year. (Họ ở London vào kỳ nghỉ hè năm ngoái.)

Với động từ thường:

(+): S + V-ed

(-): S + didn't + V (nguyên thể)

(?): Did + S + V (nguyên thể)?

Ví dụ: We studied English last night. (Tối qua chúng tôi đã học tiếng Anh)

2. Cách sử dụng thì quá khứ đơn

- Diễn tả một hành động đã xảy ra và chấm dứt hoàn toàn trong quá khứ

Ví dụ: I went to school last year. (Tôi đã đến trường vào năm ngoái.)

- Thì quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn, diễn tả các hành động xảy ra liên tiếp trong quá khứ

Ví dụ: When I was a kid, I walked to school every day. (Khi tôi còn nhỏ, tôi đi bộ tới trường mỗi ngày.)

- Diễn tả một hành động xen vào một hành động đang diễn ra trong quá khứ.

Ví dụ: He went to class, sat down, and opened his book. (Anh ấy đã đi tới lớp, ngồi xuống và mở sách của anh ấy ra.)

- Diễn đạt hành động không có thật ở hiện tại trong câu điều kiện loại II.

Ví dụ: If you were me, you would do it. (Nếu bạn là tôi, bạn sẽ làm thế.)

- Dùng trong câu mang ý nghĩa mơ ước nhưng không có thật.

Ví dụ: I wish I were in America now. (Tôi ước gì bây giờ tôi ở Mỹ)

- Dùng để miêu tả một sự kiện đã trải qua trong lịch sử.

Ví dụ: The Chinese invented printing. (Người Trung Quốc đã phát minh ra máy in)

3. Dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ đơn

Trong thì quá khứ đơn thì xuất hiện các từ như sau:

- esterday: Hôm qua

- Last night: Tối qua

- Last week: Tuần trước

- Last month: Tháng trước

- Last year: Năm ngoái

- Ago: Cách đây

- at, on, in… + thời gian trong quá khứ

- When + mệnh đề chia thì quá khứ đơn
